REVIEW: Love Rocky and the Princess of Whales

“I love Rocky,” says NW, peering at the iPad, “but Sylvester Stallone as a painter? It just doesn’t seem … right.”

Using a spoon for a change.

“Oxymoron,” I say.

“No need for that,” he says, tightly.

“It’s where two things that shouldn’t work together are so good that they do,” I say. “Like Kate Middleton abseiling in leggings. Our daughter can be oxymoronic too. It’s not an insult.”

It’s true. NG can eat a yoghurt to its last dregs with a fork. She can take a white muzzy to the swings in January and return with it clean. And she and Sylvester are in good company.

Because our latest obsession is with Love Rocky – an independent clothing label designed, printed and sold from a studio in Hampshire. Its owner, Rhiannon, likes ‘cute zombies’ – an oxymoron if ever there was one, especially when on children’s clothing – but it works. So well, in fact, that she has fans all over the world including rock queens Gwen Stefani and Pink.

The items arrive beautifully wrapped. NG immediately strips and puts on the pink ‘Naarwhal’ t-shirt and grey hoodie. I tell NG the little man on her back is called Rocky. When I see him standing under a raincloud with an umbrella I do think of a slightly less child-friendly Eeyore and brace myself for NG’s verdict but she is infatuated. “I do love Rocky,” she says. “And Mummy, I do love my little brother’s bek-fust.”

NC, who has just finished kicking with delight at his own coolness in a Love Rocky romper babysuit with pirates, has no say as NG swipes his mush and spoons it into her own mouth.

“Can you feed him? He’s still a bit hungry,” I say, without much hope.

She does, which is excellent, though the mush goes all over NC and the narwhal. But never mind – Love Rocky uses ‘brutally child tested’ inks so the clothes are wash/dry as normal and prints are fine to be ironed over with a medium heat. The items are also high quality cotton and therefore so, so soft.

Rocking with love.

Rocking with love.

“Mummy, I can paint with this spoon if I like,” NG says as she stares at the empty mush receptacle thoughtfully. And I so I fill it with paint and let her. And the end result isn’t that different from Sylvester’s efforts.
